Kia-ora Massey students and graduates

Posted by John Ross on May 5, 2008

If you are a Massey University, New Zealand student or graduate and are looking for work then this is for you:

Massey University General Virtual Careers Fair

From noon on Tuesday 6th May until noon on Thursday 8th May 2008

This is for you if you are looking for a job – or a change of job – now or in the next twelve months or so.  Running for forty-eight hours from 12.00 noon on Tuesday May 6th, Massey University’s General Virtual Careers Fair will be open to all Massey students and graduates who have registered to participate.

What is the General Virtual Careers Fair?

This Fair offers web-based access to recruitment and vacancy information from potential employers.

All participating employers anticipate having job vacancies now or within the next twelve months.  They are keen to attract applications from Massey students and recent graduates – some employers seek those who are available for work now, others those who will graduate in the next year. A number have opportunities for short-term or vacation work.

Opportunities publicised through the Fair will be a mix of jobs for people with little or no relevant experience, and jobs for those with experience.

Who is it for?

The event is aimed at all Massey University students and recent graduates – but in particular extramural students, recent graduates and those who cannot attend the Palmerston North Careers Expos.

This is a recruitment event that will be of most interest and relevance to:

  • Those actively seeking their first job, to change jobs or to change career direction.
  • Those available for work now or in (approximately) the next twelve months.

Once registered, you will be able to access a database of participating employers.  This will be searchable by sector; type of vacancy; location and other factors.  You are encouraged to search this database regularly in the run-up to the Fair as the employers participating, and their opportunities will be continually changing.

What else will the Fair offer?

  • The opportunity to ‘chat’ in real-time with Massey’s careers staff and other students and graduates, on topics that include career choice; job seeking and applications and interviews

  • The ability to create a brief ‘on-line’ profile where you can outline your skills, knowledge and experience and the type of work you seek.  You can grant permission for this to be accessed by employers who may then contact you directly for more information.

Tell me more about Profiles –

To take part in this Fair you’ll need to register and you can do so from now on.  However, it’s only when the Fair is live (from noon on Tuesday 6th May until noon on Thursday 8th May 2008)  that you’ll be able to look in depth at the employers taking part; the opportunities that they have; the type of applicants that they want and so on.

You may well find that there are employers taking part that you’d like to work for.  That’s where Profiles come in.

From now, you have the chance to complete an on-line Profile.  This is a mini-CV where you outline your skills; interests; knowledge and career aims…in brief.

When the Fair is ‘live’ you can go back to your Profile; amend it for each employer you’re interested in then ‘release’ it to them – in other words, give the employer permission to access it.

  • By ‘releasing’ your Profile you’re letting the employer know that you’d like to work there.
  • By amending your Profile to suit each employer you’re interested in, you’re showing them that you have what they seek – e.g. relevant skills, knowledge and so on.

I’m interested – what do I need to do?
